The concept of green building has evolved as people have become increasingly aware of the impact buildings have on the natural environment and its resources and the quality of life of the people who live and work in them. Green building or LEED construction focuses on optimizing a building’s design, utilizing eco-friendly materials and construction methods and creating resource efficiency throughout a building’s life-cycle. Also referred to as sustainability, green building is intended to conserve and protect natural resources, contribute to a better environment and occupancy health and provide cost savings.

LEED certification is a formal process that was developed to offer standards for performance measurement for green buildings and encourage sustainable practices in design and development. Pursuing formal LEED certification is complex and benefits enormously from a professional construction manager’s leadership and technical guidance. Construction managers can provide owners with assistance on evaluating green options for new residential development as well as home renovation projects.
